PRO GREENS

Multiple researches have over the years demonstrated the health benefits of eating a diet rich in vegetables and fruit. In Europe, children’s consumption of fruit and vegetables is far below the current WHO recommendations of eating at least 400 gr of fruit and vegetables per day. There is a concern that both the amount and variation of fruit and vegetables may be declining. With this background, the PRO GREENS project is an EU funded research undertaken to assess the current fruit and vegetables intake and to develop effective strategies to promote consumption of fruit and vegetables in school children across Europe. The main target group are 11-year old children.

Twelve partners from eleven countries collaborate in this project, which runs from August 2008 through July 2011. The PRO GREENS project is a follow up of the Pro Children project, which was funded by the EU’s 5th framework programme on research and supported by the World Health Organisation. The main objectives of the projects are:

  • To assess the level of consumption of fruit and vegetables in children before and after a school-based intervention.
  • To develop and test effective strategies to promote fruit and vegetable consumption among school children.

On the basis of research, PRO GREENS aims at setting up clear diet recommendations and assist the youngest in their fruit and vegetables intake by clarifying  and harmonising the content of existing messages to boost the consumption (5  a day, number and size of portion, etc.)
